Critical Care Survival Guide
Built for Real Situations. Made for Real Shifts.
Amazing book!!
Such a thorough and well explained book. The illustrations are modern and has helped me become a better icu nurse. I can’t recommend this book enough
Must-have for new ICU nurses and preceptors
There's a lot to learn in the ICU, and this handbook addresses all of the technical side of things. There are extremely helpful drawings/illustrations and references. Buy this, keep it in nurse bag or with your stuff at the nurse's station to reference PRN throughout a shift. If you're on nights, it's a great resource to have on-hand to put the pieces together mentally of what's going on with your patients. If you're an ICU nurse educator, buy one for all of your new hires and preceptors STAT!
Must-have resource for ICU learning
As a doctoral-prepared critical care nurse who has spent years at the bedside, I have accumulated more critical care books and reference guides than I care to admit. Nicole Kupchik’s Critical Care Survival Guide is different—this is one I will actually keep within reach. It is practical, clinically relevant, and clearly written by someone who understands what clinicians actually need at the bedside.
This is gold for a new grad in the ICU
Starting in the ICU as a new grad is tough. Believe what you’ve heard about it but know you can do it. My strategy is to debrief daily about things I saw and didn’t comprehend in the moment. This book has solidified what I’m seeing as I use all my senses to learn best. Nicole did a great job with this book!
Super comprehensive overview
I love that this resource touches on all aspects of critical care. It's not easy to find something that discusses ECMO and Impella, but also ICP and trauma. And everything in between. Nothing is super detailed, so it's great for new nurses or students to get their feet wet. I am an educator and use it to help my new nurses review some topics on a surface level. I love it so much!

Yes, it’s built for them. The guide uses colorful illustrations, clear charts and tables, and diagrams to explain concepts, like the heart illustration that helps you remember normal intra-cardiac pressures. Complex topics are broken down into clean, visual pages, so you can scan a section and take it in quickly.
Short survival tips and memory tricks sit next to the visuals, which helps details stick. If you learn better from pictures and diagrams than from long paragraphs, this format should suit you well.
Yes. The guide is designed for critical care nurses, APRNs, respiratory therapists and physicians, and it’s a good fit for students and new graduates entering the ICU. The tabbed sections make it easy to find the right topic, and the visual layout makes unfamiliar concepts easier to follow. Experienced clinicians use it as a quick refresher.
No, it’s meant to sit beside your textbook, not replace it. A textbook teaches the full theory and gives you the depth you need to learn a topic from the ground up. This guide is for the moments when you need an answer fast, such as a normal range, a formula or a key point in the middle of a shift.
Many people keep their textbook for studying and the guide for quick reference. Used together, the textbook helps you understand why, and the guide helps you find what you need in seconds.
That’s what it’s made for. The spiral binding lets it lie flat on a desk or workstation, and the color-coded tabs take you straight to the section you need. Built-in pockets give you a place to keep your own notes. Since policies differ between workplaces, check your facility’s rules on reference materials.
